E-commerce car platform Carvana will build a $40 million distribution and fulfillment center in Bessemer, according to an announcement from Gov. Kay Ivey’s office.
The project is expected to create more than 450 jobs.
The Bessemer hub will handle fulfillment activities for Alabama and surrounding states, as part of the company’s inventory network. The center will also be home to inspection, maintenance and photography operations.
The planned site is described as a privately owned site in Bessemer.
“We have been working hard to position Alabama as a prime destination for fast-growing growing e-commerce companies needing a first-class infrastructure network for their distribution operations,” Ivey said in a statement. “We are thrilled that Carvana has selected Bessemer for its newest state-of-the-art distribution hub and look forward to building a partnership with this innovative company.”
The jobs will have an average annual salary exceeding $35,000. Carvana has been operating its “curbside” location in Birmingham since last year on Richard Arrington Jr. Boulevard. The platform allows buyers to shop, finance, buy and select cars for next day delivery or pickup from their distinctive Car Vending Machines.
